Internationational Collaboration

In order to realize the CLIMATE RIBBON’S™ function as a sophisticated environmental management system, intensive consultation has been conducted between Swire Properties Inc and a multi-disciplinary international team including Hugh Dutton Associés of Paris, Cardiff University of Wales, Carnegie Mellon, alongside the project’s architect, Arquitectonica.  A leading German design firm, Gartner, has been enlisted to build the structure.

Form Follows Function

The primary objective of the CLIMATE RIBBON is to provide the optimal environmental quality for the shopping center. To do this, the CLIMATE RIBBON is designed for three key benefits: ventilation so that air conditioning is not needed in the shopping center’s public places, shelter from inclement weather and solar shading for the hottest times of the day.

Key design features:

  • The surface of the CLIMATE RIBBON is a dynamic series of flat, inclined planes positioned at variable angles; the positioning of each plane and its relation to its neighbor is the result of careful analysis of sun paths, wind patterns and the need for flexibility in the structure.
  • The slope of each plane allows rainwater to drain easily into storage cisterns for reuse.
  • The roof planes are supported by a sleek steel frame structure in white, minimizing its visual impact.
  • An upper glazed ‘skin’ provides rain protection and also acts as a partial filter for solar radiation.
  • Inside the retail center, a continuous series of dramatic fabric ‘blades’ provides elegant sun shading.  The blades vary in height and angle in response to the angle of the sun’s rays, while maximizing views of the sky.  This provides a sheltered, but open air, environment and decorates the interior of the retail center with wonderful patterns of light throughout the day.
  • Toward the eastern end of Brickell City Centre, the CLIMATE RIBBON gently lifts up to create a ‘scoop’ that captures trade winds in the summer.  Other parts of the structure act as deflectors or additional ‘scoops’, ensuring that a flow of air, between 6-9 knots in speed, keep the temperature comfortable throughout the public spaces.
